09.04.10: Martin 3, United South 0

The Martin Lady Tigers broke through a winless district drought that lasted three long years when they swept United South in three games, 26-24, 25-20 and 25-14, on Saturday to claim their first District 29-5A win of the season.

Martin (11-7, 1-2 29-5A) had the momentum from the inception of the game, despite falling behind in the first game, 16-12.

United South (8-10, 0-3) was in the driver's seat and had a 23-21 advantage in the opening game, but the Lady Panthers could not find a way to consistently serve the ball over the net and had a hard time getting their offense going.

Kazandra Blanquez quarterbacked the Lady Tigers in all three games, masterfully distributing the ball among Martin's big hitters.

Martin was led by the offensive attack of AK Valdez, Kim Reilly and Ariana Ramirez, who combined for 21 kills in the Lady Tigers win.

United South never fully recovered from dropping the first game and continued to sporadically put rallies together.

MARTIN STATS: Reilly (six kills, three blocks), Valdez (six kills), Blanquez (two kills, 24 assists, three points), Delgado (four kills, three blocks, one dig, six points), Ramirez (nine kills, one dig, one point).

UNITED SOUTH STATS: Linda Resendez (14 assists, nine digs, three points), Ashley Gutierrez (10 digs), Amanda Salinas (nine points), Marilynn Palacios (six kills), Leslie Campos (10 kills, seven digs, three points) and Rhodale Covington (three kills).
