Week 7 Football: LBJ 19, Martin 0

The LBJ Wolves spent their Saturday making history.
Playing in front of a homecoming crowd, the Wolves defeated the Martin Tigers 19-0 at the SAC.
The dominant victory, which was the fourth win of the season for LBJ, officially made this year’s team the winningest squad in the school's young history.
The ingredients in the Wolves’ victory were all the usual suspects in a successful Villaseñor-coached team: a strong running game and a superb defense.
LBJ's (3-3 District 29-5A, 4-3 overall) experienced defense, which is among the best in the district, forced a pair of turnovers from the Martin Tigers (1-5, 1-6) and made stops when they needed them to keep their opponent off the board.
The Wolves didn’t entirely look like their early season I-formation selves either. LBJ made a few adjustments to the offense and increasingly ran the ball toward the edges of the field out of a shotgun formation that successfully amassed 228 yards of team offense.
LBJ was led by Ricky Flores, who racked up 143 yards and two scores on 18 carries, including an early 56-yard touchdown run.
Flores' frequent partner in the backfield, Vaca, also performed well, contributing 31 yards on nine carries, including a 13-yard score on a direct snap.
Martin’s offense performed better than the score indicates as it twice reached the LBJ red zone to come up empty-handed both times.
The Tigers attempted just a handful of passes and completed only one for a short five yards; it was the only complete pass by either team in the entire game.
The majority of the game was spent pounding it out on the ground where seven players received touches.
Martin’s Mario Treviño led his team in rushing with 79 yards on 16 carries and running back Salvador Farias was second among the team’s many running backs with eight carries for 50 yards.

10.15.10: Volleyball: Martin 3, LBJ 1

The Martin Lady Tigers have been taking small steps in the right direction as they have three games left in their season.
After dropping the first round game to Lyndon B. Johnson, the Lady Tigers exacted revenge by beating the Lady Wolves at LBJ, 25-23, 16-25, 27-25 and 26-24, to split the season series on Friday night.
Martin (2-13 29-5A, 12-18) utilized a combination of perseverance and will power to come from behind in all three games to pull out a victory.
In the opening game, Martin rolled off three straight points to take it after falling behind 23-22.
LBJ (3-12, 6-22), behind the dynamic arm of Lety Reyes, who recorded 21 kills for the game, pulled the Lady Wolves out of despair with a great performance in the second game.
Reyes had nine kills to give LBJ a 25-16 victory and even the series.
Martin, however, turned up the heat and never wavered, even when it fell behind in Games 3 and 4.
Martin's defense was the key to the Lady Tigers victory as they turned back the Lady Wolves offensive attack that was paced by Reyes' 21 kills and Lizzette Martinez's 11 kills.
Michelle Perez and Analee Chavarria led the Lady Tiger defense, which combined for 34 digs in the back row.
The Lady Tigers, who were on the brink of losing Game 3 when LBJ held a 24-20 lead, dug deep down inside and turned up the defense to spark the offense, which rolled off five straight points to go up 25-24 before finishing the game at 27-25.
The Lady Tigers sprinkled that defensive magic again as they came back from a 17-9 deficit to even the fourth game at 20 apiece and work toward a 26-24 victory.

10.12.10: Volleyball: Eagle Pass 3, Martin 0

The Lady Eagles swept 25-21, 25-5, 25-15. Eagle Pass improved to 14-0 in District, 28-5 overall. Martin fell to 1-13, 11-18. Leading the way for Martin was Michelle Perez (16 digs), Kassandra Blanquez (12 assists, three points, three digs), Mariana Ramirez (five kills, two digs) and Kristen Reilly (six blocks, three kills).

Week 6 Football: Eagle Pass 35, Martin 7

The Eagle Pass Eagles took care of business on Saturday night, topping Martin, 35-7, in Eagle Pass to stay in contention for a District 29-5A title.
The Eagles improved to 5-1 overall, 4-1 in district. Martin fell to 1-5, 1-4.
The game was mundane and sloppy in the first half, as Eagle Pass did nothing spectacular but did what was necessary to pull out the win.
Eagle Pass held Martin to 132 total yards. The Tigers amassed 97 rushing yards on 44 attempts. They compiled 35 passing yards.
Alex Alvarado scored Martin’s lone touchdown on a 1-yard scamper. Mario Trevino led the team in rushing with 22 yards on nine carries. Fernie Medina had 18 on seven and Fermin Gutierrez added 17 on 11.
Edgar Benavides had both of Martin’s pass receptions for 35 yards.
Eagle Pass star quarterback Tony Galvan carried the ball 14 times for 102 yards. He accounted for two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing.
Rolando Salinas scored two touchdowns for Eagle Pass and caught four passes for 164 yards, including a 90-yard TD reception.
Overall, the Eagles had 362 total yards, 198 rushing and 164 passing.

Week 5 Football: Martin 33, C.C. Winn 7

Under the bright lights of Kruger Field, the Martin Tigers took home their first district win of the 2010 season, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Homecoming proved to be a great one as the Tigers (1-3 District 29-5A, 1-4 overall) gave their fans a 33-7 victory over the visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks (0-4, 0-5) on Friday night.

Martin’s ground game and old fashion ball control proved to be the deciding factor.

Running back Mario Trevino was the Tigers’ workhorse on the ground as he accumulated 121 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

The Tigers racked up 278 yards on offense and forced two fumbles.

Martin did not completely abandon its aerial game as it got on the board early in the first quarter on a 55-yard pass from senior quarterback Luis Diaz-De Leon to wide receiver Edgar Benavides on just the third play of the game.

The Tigers exploded for 13 points in the second quarter on a 12-yard run by Rudy Castillo and a 35-yard run by Trevino, taking a 19-0 lead into halftime.

The meticulous game plan that had the Tiger offense on the field for the majority of the game also forced the C.C. Winn defense to be called for five offside penalties that totaled for 25 yards for the Tigers.

The Mavericks were tagged for seven penalties for 55 yards while Martin only accumulated three for 20.

10.02.10: Volleyball: Cigarroa 3, Martin 0

The Lady Toros swept, 25-19, 25-16, 24-16. Cigarroa improved to 7-4 in District 29-5A, 20-12 overall. Martin fell to 1-10, 11-15. 09.28.2010: Volleyball: United 3, Martin 0

The Lady Longhorns swept, 27-25, 27-25, 25-19. United improved to 8-2 in District 29-5A, 15-12 overall. Martin fell to 1-9, 11-14. Leading the way for United was Ali Sanchez (seven kills), Natalie Chavez (15 kills, 20 assists, five points, nine digs) and Ashley Everett (nine kills). Leading the way for Martin was Kassandra Blanquez (30 assists, three digs), Michelle Perez (22 digs, three kills) and Ariana Ramirez (eight kills, four digs, three points).

Week 4: Football: United South 23, Martin 20

After experimenting with a new spread offense for their first three games of the season, the Martin Tigers decided to go old school with a surprise return to the double wing formation.

But even the unexpected change of offensive scheme wasn't enough to overcome the hunger of the United South Panthers.

The Panthers had their best game of the season en route to a 23-20 victory Thursday night at the SAC.

South improved to 1-2 in District 29-5A, 1-3 overall. Martin fell to 0-3, 0-4.

"Winning answers a lot of things and all a sudden everything's okay," said United South head football coach Jose Briones. "Whether you win by 50 or one, it's the same feeling."

It took a second half comeback to win it for the Panthers, who trailed 14-10 at the half.

The Tigers had a chance to tie on their final drive, but missed on a 45-yard field goal as time expired.

Camarillo finished the game with 120 passing yards, completing 8 of 21 attempts, in addition to adding two touchdown runs of 19 and 51 yards, respectively.

United South tailbacks Luis Castillo and Paul Lopez shared rushing duties evenly. Lopez had 16 yards and a touchdown on eight carries and Castillo had 33 yards on eight.

Castillo doubled as the team's leading receiver with four catches for 66 yards.

Martin totaled 195 yards of offense on the night, barely outdone by United South's 237.

Tigers senior quarterback Luis Diaz-Deleon completed 10 of 14 passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.

Nearly half of Martin's entire varsity roster touched the ball in the night's game. Ten of the 23 varsity athletes had carries, and an eleventh had a reception.

Tailback Mario Trevino led the Tigers with 32 yards on eight carries and also led in receptions with three catches for 12 yards, including an eight-yard touchdown.

09.25.2010: Volleyball: Nixon 3, Martin 0

Michelle Perez (17 digs, three points) and Kasandra Blanquez (seven assists, three points, three digs) led Martin. Week 3: Football: Cigarroa 14, Martin 7

Cigarroa did it again.

With the score tied at 7 and time dwindling in the fourth quarter, the Toros drove 47 yards down the field and scored the game-winning touchdown with a just over a minute left on the clock to give them a 14-7 victory over the Martin Tigers at Krueger Field on Friday night.

Cigarroa, winless a year ago, improved to 3-0 overall, 2-0 in District 29-5A. Martin fell to 0-3, 0-2.

The Toros won last week over Nixon via a touchdown with four seconds remaining in that game.

The night's final scoring play for the Toros was reminiscent of a week ago. Once again, it was a pass from quarterback Victor Martinez that sealed the win.

Martinez found wide receiver Samuel Macias for the game-winning 15 yard touchdown completion.

Martinez finished the game with 49 passing yards on 6 of 11 passing. He threw for one touchdown and for one interception.

Cigarroa's other touchdown was delivered by the defensive side of the ball. Early in the first half ,the Toros 'Wrecking Crew' defense forced Martin quarterback Luis Diaz-Deleon to fumble on a sack. Safety Jesus Sanchez scooped up the ball and housed it for six.

Sanchez also came through with an interception of Diaz-Deleon in the final minute of the game to end Martin's final furious drive and seal the Cigarroa victory.

The Cigarroa defense held Martin to 92 yards of total offense. Cigarroa managed 153.

Diaz-Deleon was held to just 41 passing yards. He completed 6 of 14 passes and was picked off once.

Martin's Luis Estevis, a recent addition to the team, led the team in receiving yards with 22 off two catches.

Alex Alvarado led the Tigers in rushing with 24 yards on four carries. Rudy Castillo also did well out of the Tigers backfield with 17 yards and a touchdown on three carries, though he didn't touch the ball a single time in the second half.

The Toros let eight different backs carry the ball for a total of 104 yards on the ground.

Martinez led the team in carries with 17 carries for 37 yards, including scampers of 20 and 23, respectively.

Power back Jesse Sanchez led the Toros in total yards with 44 on nine touches.

Cigarroa is the lone undefeated team in Laredo.

09.14.2010: Volleyball: LBJ 3, Martin 2

The Lyndon B. Johnson Lady Wolves finally broke into the district win column.
The Lady Wolves beat Martin on the road, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 22-25 and 16-14 to claim their first District 29-5A win for the season.
Martin, which earlier in the season had broken a three-year winless district drought, was not able to take advantage of its home crowd.
The Lady Wolves were slow to find their offensive rhythm, much to the delight of the Lady Tigers, who jumped out to a 3-2 lead.
LBJ, however, behind Lety Reyes and Lizzette Martinez, started to find the holes in the Martin defense.
The Lady Wolves built a 20-15 lead on great offensive movement of the ball and a defense that denied Martin any offensive momentum.
A different Martin team took the court in game two.
Amy Delgado and Amber Garcia controlled the net to start Martin's offensive attack.
LBJ battled every step of the way, keeping within striking distance to regain the lead at any moment, but the Lady Tigers took game two to even the series.
LBJ jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead when it was penalized for a wrong rotation to its lead and fall behind 2-1.
The loss of those points, though, did not deter the Lady Wolves’ motivation as they regained the lead at 5-3.
LBJ maintained the lead all the way through to take game three, 25-22.
Martin fought back to even up the series at two, taking the fourth game, 25-22, to send it to the fifth and final game.
Both teams pulled out all the stops with great offensive play and a defense that would not give up.
Down the stretch, Martin committed key errors on defense, leaving LBJ jumping for joy with its first district win.
LBJ STATS: Yesenia Ortiz (one block, three digs, four kills), Jenny Salinas (three blocks, one dig, four kills), Rachel Aguilar (five kills), Lizzette Martinez (12 kills, 22 digs, three aces), Daniela Garza (20 digs, threes aces), Letty Reyes (16 kills, 24 digs, three aces), Stephanie Almanza (10 digs, 13 assists), Ethel Garcia (one ace, two digs, 28 assists).

Week 2 Football: United 61, Martin 13

All week long, the question on the lips of high school football fans across Laredo was whether or not United senior quarterback Tony Salas, injured in the season opener against Smithson Valley last week, would be healthy enough to start against Martin on Thursday.

The answer proved to be no, Salas didn't start. Surprisingly, it didn't matter.

District play kicked off for 29-5A with a dominant performance by the United Longhorns over the Martin Tigers, 61-13, at the SAC.

Martin scored first on a 40-yard touchdown run by Rudy Castillo, but United scored the next 61, including 16 points within the following two minutes of play, and the route was on.

The game was highlighted by a number of short, single play possessions.

The two teams combined for seven single play drives.

United’s four drives all resulted in touchdowns and accounted for 210 yards of quick strike offense. Martin’s three single play drives resulted in two interceptions and a safety.

It was possessions like those which had United coach David Sanchez beaming and excited about the direction of his program at the end of the night.

No two Longhorns had bigger nights than junior running back Billy Williams III and wide receiver Nick Fuentes.

Sanchez had heaped high expectations on Williams in the weeks leading up to the season and Williams proved he was worthy of the hype.

In what was only his second varsity start, Williams tore up the Martin defense for nearly 200 yards.

In the first half alone, Williams rushed for 187 yards, highlighted by a 96-yard jaunt down the middle of the field for a score. He sat the second half out to allow backups game-time experience

Fuentes had five catches for 136 yards in the first two quarters before joining Williams on the sideline after halftime. Four of Fuentes' five catches went for touchdowns, and several of the catches were displays of exceptional athleticism.

09.11.10: Eagle Pass 3, Martin 0

Eagle Pass swept, 25-15, 25-14, 25-9. The Lady Eagles improved to 5-0 in District 29-5A, 18-5 overall. The Lady Tigers fell to 1-4, 11-9.

09.04.10: Martin 3, United South 0

The Martin Lady Tigers broke through a winless district drought that lasted three long years when they swept United South in three games, 26-24, 25-20 and 25-14, on Saturday to claim their first District 29-5A win of the season.

Martin (11-7, 1-2 29-5A) had the momentum from the inception of the game, despite falling behind in the first game, 16-12.

United South (8-10, 0-3) was in the driver's seat and had a 23-21 advantage in the opening game, but the Lady Panthers could not find a way to consistently serve the ball over the net and had a hard time getting their offense going.

Kazandra Blanquez quarterbacked the Lady Tigers in all three games, masterfully distributing the ball among Martin's big hitters.

Martin was led by the offensive attack of AK Valdez, Kim Reilly and Ariana Ramirez, who combined for 21 kills in the Lady Tigers win.

United South never fully recovered from dropping the first game and continued to sporadically put rallies together.

MARTIN STATS: Reilly (six kills, three blocks), Valdez (six kills), Blanquez (two kills, 24 assists, three points), Delgado (four kills, three blocks, one dig, six points), Ramirez (nine kills, one dig, one point).

UNITED SOUTH STATS: Linda Resendez (14 assists, nine digs, three points), Ashley Gutierrez (10 digs), Amanda Salinas (nine points), Marilynn Palacios (six kills), Leslie Campos (10 kills, seven digs, three points) and Rhodale Covington (three kills).

Rough start for Tigers

It was not the best of start for the Martin Tigers in their season opener Friday at home against Roma.
The Tigers fell 28-7 and were doomed by the inability to capitalize in the red zone. Roma, on the other hand, thrived at just that.
"You can't get in that situation and not finish it," Martin coach Don Davis told Laredo Morning Times on Friday. "You can't shoot yourself in the foot."
There were three red-zone opportunities which the Tigers failed upon that could have made a dramatic difference. Still, it's only one game and Martin is still tinkering with a brand new spread offense.
Also, there were plenty of stars on both sides of the ball.
Defensively, defensive back Fernie Medina and linebackers Alex Alvarado and Rudy Castillo played strong. Offensively, linemen Victor Martinez and Bojesse Thorpe kept quarterback Luis Diaz-Deleon safe from harm.
The aforementioned offense produced mixed results. Diaz-Deleon accounted for one touchdown and one interception and completed 13-of-28 passes for 187 yards. But most of that was due to a rough start when he threw for seven straight incompletions.
The Tigers have a week of practice and planning before starting district play. Things will look very different for the Tigers when they play United in two weeks.

Week 0: Roma 28, Martin 7

The Martin Tigers entered the 2010 season with a new spread offense and a plan in hand to outscore their opponents.

The Tigers learned Friday night, however, that plans rarely go off without a hitch, as they fell to the Roma Gladiators at Krueger Field by a final score of 28-7.

It was a game determined in large part by fourth-and-goal situations.

When Roma had its chances, it capitalized. When Martin found itself within the 10, the Tigers couldn’t punch it in.

Even in the loss, however, there were signs of hope for the future.

Coach Don Davis named a number of players who stood out. Defensive back Fernie Medina and linebacker Alex Alvarado protected their parts of the field from the Roma offensive attack, and linebacker Rudy Castillo delivered the hit of the night on a Roma receiver to break up a pass.

On the offensive side of the ball, Davis praised the efforts of linemen Victor Martinez and Bojesse Thorpe for keeping their quarterback safe and relatively sack free on the night.

The performance which was watched most closely, however, was that of Martin senior quarterback Luis Diaz-Deleon.

Diaz-Deleon started the night with seven straight incompletion; a combination of dropped passes and balls off the mark.

But he switched things on in the second quarter and showed flashes of the kind of player he could be.

Midway through the second quarter, Diaz-Deleon notched his first positive completion of the night on a toss to Martin’s two-way player Castillo, who had found himself open behind the defense, for a 47-yard bomb.

Six plays later and Diaz-Deleon found Fermin Gutierrez in the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown.

The 90-yard drive was Diaz-Deleon's highlight moment in an otherwise streaky performance.

Diaz-Deleon finished the night 13-for-28 for 187 yards, one touchdown and one interception, in addition to rushing for 25 yards on 10 attempts.

Martin running back Mario Treviño carried the ball 12 times for 52 yards.

The Tigers amassed 292 yards of total offense.

Best / Worst Case Martin

The Martin Tigers have always prided themselves in running offenses which match their personnel. For the past three years, that meant running out of a veer formation. In 2010, it means flinging the rock with a spread offense. The offense has looked good in early scrimmages, but question marks on the defensive side of the ball will determine whether or not Martin improves on its 2-8 record from 2009.

BEST CASE SCENARIO

In a best case scenario season Martin will get off to a hot start with a home win over Roma at Krueger Field. Roma has an all district running back in Nestor Garcia, which sounds threatening given the weakness of Martins run defense, but Roma only amassed 12 points a game in 2009. If Martins offense gets off to a high-flying start they can count this non-district contest as a win.

After a bye week Martin will play the United Longhorns at the SAC. United looks to be one of the strongest teams in district and Martin’s new offense tested early in this match up. Even in the best of Worlds, Martin is unlikely to emerge with a win. Putting the Tigers at 1-1.

A week three match up with Cigarroa will be a must win date for the Martin Tigers and should provide a fantastic contest of contrasting offenses. This was one of Martins two wins in 2009 with a final score of 30-8. In the best of worlds Martin will have found answers to its rushing D woes by week three and will stonewall Cigarroa for a similar result as last year and a 2-1 start on the season.

Martin’s week four game against United South will be an uphill battle for Martin, and even in the best of worlds they will be hard pressed to overcome the Panthers. A best case scenario would likely be a high scoring loss to put the Tigers at 2-2.

The Tigers face Eagle Pass Winn in week five on Krueger field. Eagle Pass win is the most beatable of the out-of-town programs, and in a best case scenario Martin earns the win at home. A win against Winn would advance the Tigers to 3-2 on the season.

Martin follows up their contest with one Eagle Pass school at home by facing the other Eagle Pass school on the road in week six. Even in the best of worlds it is unlikely for the Tigers to beat out the stronger of the two Eagle Pass programs, putting Martin at 3-3 on the season.

Week seven witnesses the Tigers facing off against the LBJ Wolves. The Wolves have a strong running back in Ricky Flores, but has question marks in its wide receiver corps. If the Tigers can force a lot of third and long situations upon the Wolves they just might pull off the upset to advance to 4-3 on the year.

After LBJ, Martin faces a pair of strong foes when it travels to Del Rio before returning home for a Thursday night game against Alexander. Del Rio and Alexander figure to be playoff teams this year, and neither of the schools are likely to slip up when facing Martin. Martin probably comes off of these two weeks in a best case scenario with its first losing record of the season, 4-5.

This all sets Martin up for its season finale, the grand daddy of all Laredo Rivalries, the Martin v Nixon game. In a rivalry game like this, anything can happen. In the best of worlds, that anything is a win for Martin.

The best case scenario for Martin is a year where the defense finds some answers and the offense solidifies around quarterback Luis Diaz-Deleon. A 5-5 campaign is not beyond the realm of possibility and would be a solid improvement coming off of a 2-8 year.

WORST CASE

In a year where everything goes wrong Martin would begin the season with a disastrous home loss against Roma. Roma had scouts at the Martin scrimmage; they saw how porous the Martin defense was against a dedicated running game. You can guarantee the running team from Roma will shove the ball down Martin's throat and unless Martin has made significant strides in its rush defense over the past week, Roma could literally run away with the game. 0-1.

A terrible year would witness United knocking off Martin and would follow that up with a week where Martin's run defense has yet to be fixed and Cigarroa’s large offensive line takes full advantage of it. 0-3

Starting off 0-3, a worst case year would witness that trend continuing down the line. There are no "gimme" matches on Martin's schedule and they won't be able to take a single game off. If Martin's offense fails to find consistency and if the defense doesn't learn to cope with a rushing attach then it could be a long year for the Martin Tigers with 0-10 as a worst case scenario.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

Installing a new offense is never easy and finding answers to defensive woes is not something you want to be doing in the final week of preseason. Martin should beat Eagle Pass win with the help of a home field advantage, and it's likely the Tigers pull off another win somewhere else along the way, but in the end strides made on offense will likely be undercut by holes in the defense for a repeat 2-8 year.
