Week 5 Football: Martin 33, C.C. Winn 7

Under the bright lights of Kruger Field, the Martin Tigers took home their first district win of the 2010 season, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Homecoming proved to be a great one as the Tigers (1-3 District 29-5A, 1-4 overall) gave their fans a 33-7 victory over the visiting C.C. Winn Mavericks (0-4, 0-5) on Friday night.

Martin’s ground game and old fashion ball control proved to be the deciding factor.

Running back Mario Trevino was the Tigers’ workhorse on the ground as he accumulated 121 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

The Tigers racked up 278 yards on offense and forced two fumbles.

Martin did not completely abandon its aerial game as it got on the board early in the first quarter on a 55-yard pass from senior quarterback Luis Diaz-De Leon to wide receiver Edgar Benavides on just the third play of the game.

The Tigers exploded for 13 points in the second quarter on a 12-yard run by Rudy Castillo and a 35-yard run by Trevino, taking a 19-0 lead into halftime.

The meticulous game plan that had the Tiger offense on the field for the majority of the game also forced the C.C. Winn defense to be called for five offside penalties that totaled for 25 yards for the Tigers.

The Mavericks were tagged for seven penalties for 55 yards while Martin only accumulated three for 20.
